In addition, after learning of the lucrative benefits of a successful Olympics, Germany announced in late July that it was officially bidding to host the 2040 Summer Olympics, which will coincide with the 50th anniversary of German reunification.

The New York Times added, "This may surprise even Parisians. In the weeks and months leading up to the opening of the Paris Olympics, there was a steady stream of complaints and concerns," and "just before French judoka Teddy Riner and former track and field star Marie-Jose Perec lit the Olympic pyre, the sadly fatalistic, apathetic atmosphere toward the Games had dissipated. The rain stopped at the opening ceremony and Paris was once again a party town".

"France (the grumbling) seems to be on vacation of its own accord", Spanish media outlet El Pais reported on August 5. "Pessimists have been preparing for the worst for years," but in the end, the city had a "relaxed and happy atmosphere," even with smiles on the faces of police officers on duty.
