Harris' deputy is set! She has taught in China, honeymooned there, and speaks Mandarin!

In a combination of several media reports, U.S. Vice President Harris, who is replacing President Joe Biden to represent the Democrats, has announced her choice of a deputy.

It's unclear if there will be a debate between Trump's VP Vance and Walz.
White House senior deputy press secretary Emilie Simons said Biden and Harris spoke on the phone Tuesday morning before officially announcing her choice of Walz, and that Biden spoke with Walz also congratulated him.
On July 21, President Joe Biden announced he was dropping his re-election bid and endorsing Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee.
And Harris officially became the Democratic nominee just after today.
Online voting involving thousands of Democratic delegates ended on the evening of Aug. 5, and the Democratic National Committee announced in the early morning hours of Aug. 6 that Harris had received 99 percent of the party's delegate votes, officially locking up the party's presidential nomination.
According to CNN, Trump's allies who are Harris' rivals are concerned that Harris would choose Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro as his deputy, potentially giving her an edge in the key battleground state.

A source close to Trump said Harris' decision to partner with Walz over Shapiro left Pennsylvania "still in the dark."
Harris ultimately decided to go with Minnesota Gov. Walz, who has a Midwestern background and is a left-wing progressive.
She is expected to formally introduce Walz tonight in Philadelphia.

Minnesota Gov. Volz, 60, served 12 years in Congress, and The New York Times quoted Democratic senators describing Volz as a working-class politician with a rural background.
Volz, who holds a bachelor's degree from Chadron State College and a master's degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato, first ran for Congress in 2006 and served as Minnesota's congressman for the 1st Congressional District until announcing his run for governor in 2016.
Born and raised in rural Nebraska, Walz graduated from Chadron State College in 1989 with a bachelor's degree in social science education.

After college, he taught high school classes in China through a Harvard-affiliated program, becoming one of the first American educators to receive government approval to teach in Chinese high schools.
Volz also served as a visiting scholar of international relations at the Macau Polytechnic University in China, a position he says helped him deepen his understanding of China.
Upon his return to the United States, Volz served full-time in the National Guard and organized annual educational trips to China for high school students.

He began his teaching career as a geography teacher in Alleyns, Nebraska, and later moved to Mankato, Minnesota, where he taught social studies at Mankato West High School and coached the school's soccer team. Volz reportedly speaks Mandarin to this day.
And, Volz and his wife Gwen, who is also a teacher, chose to spend their honeymoon in China.

From teacher to vice president, Walz's path to politics is also legendary.
Walz received an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association and the organization's endorsement. Soon after, however, Walz denounced the NRA and supported gun control measures, such as banning assault weapons.
During his first campaign for governor in 2018, the NRA downgraded his rating completely. Volz responded by saying, "My previous rating with the NRA was an A. Now I get an F. But I sleep well."

During his ten-year tenure in Congress, Walz signed several bills to increase access to higher education, provide support for students, and lower college tuition. There are some interesting things about Volz, too.
He had promised to give his son Gus a dog if he was elected governor in 2019. After the election, Gus exclaimed, "I got a dog!"
And Volz made good on his promise, adopting Scout, a black Labrador mix, later in the year.
